Hello SPL Fans & Friends (and anybody else out there)!
As you have probably noticed already, there hasn’t been much happening in the SPL Blog lately… Don’t think we have forgotten about you or that we are too lazy or that there’s nothing going on at SPL (there’s actually A LOT happening in and around SPL at the moment!… Just wait and you’ll see what we are talking about!). The thing is, we have decided to take the SPL Blog and integrate it directly in the main SPL website: spl.info. So, from now on, you can follow us there and stay up to date with everything SPL in one single place!

The second edition of “The Voice of Germany” will start airing October 18, 2012, with the presence of “The Blackout Brothers,” whose members are top seasoned German session players. For monitoring tasks, the Brothers will be using none other than our much acclaimed SPL Auditor headphone amp, having decided to adopt the 120-volt beast after sound engineers ORTH+KERN introduced them to it.
Toni Kern and Chris Orth take their technical setup very seriously (as we all should!). “We are always on the look out for new possibilities and building blocks that make the end result better,” told us sound craftsman Chris Orth, “but it should never overshoot the goal.” When looking for a solid foundation in terms of headphone amplification, Chris didn’t shy from taking a look at the top shelf: “that’s the only thing that makes differences stand out.” View Full Article »

Here is the second review of 2011 that hadn’t made it to our blog yet. ReleaseTime.de decided to put our two-channel tube processor to the test last August. Editor Holger Obst calls the Charisma 2 a “real analog sound refiner,” based on a very comprehensive review of the unit with multiple sound samples. Among his statements are the following:
“The SPL Charisma 2 Model 9733 is very flexible and delivers a very convincing tube and tape saturation effect. It opens up the stereo panorama and makes everything sound warmer, full of harmonics and powerful.”

We would like to bring your attention to a couple of reviews from 2011 that hadn’t made it to our blog yet. First we have a review from our Channel One MKII 2950 published at ReleaseTime.de. Editor Holger Obst decided to carry out a thorough inspection of our hardware channel strip and write a comprehensive review, including many sound examples:
“The Channel One does a very elegant and respectful job regarding the sound of the original unit. The FET Distortion confers more power to dull vocals without distorting or coloring them, and if you really want to get down to business you have to try it on guitars.”

Our three key performance indicators show that last week’s Musikmesse in Germany has been the most successful and record-breaking one to date for SPL: visitor record, sales record – beer turnover record.

We would like to thank all visitors and friends for their support. And to show our appreciation we will run three incredible special offers until the end of April:

SPL will arrive at this year’s Musikmesse in Frankfurt with a rack full of novelties, including 13 brand new units of its “Analog Elemental Series” — One single unit, two modules, one 19-inch rack space.

The German manufacturer has succeeded in creating 13 Elemental units combining six modules. This means you can have a Premium or Preference two-channel preamp or a single-channel preamp perfectly matched with processors like a De-Esser, a DynaMaxx compressor, a TwinTube processor, or the legendary Transient Designer second generation. If you would rather have processing capabilities only you can have a DeEsser combined with a DynaMaxx or two TwinTubes, for example.

Traditional patchbays are very useful to distribute signals. However, when it comes to mastering, many engineers wish they had more flexibility: even for experienced users a simple comparison of different processors or processing paths can become a nightmare.

With our MasterBay S it is easy to manage up to four stereo processors comfortably. Its flexible switching matrix and unique listening comparison possibilities make it easier to get the best results out of the available equipment.

Traditionally, we are glad to exhibit our gear just the way it was conceived, without add-ons. But nowadays many control rooms and musician workplaces have been invaded by computer screens, making them —along with the classic racks and desks— part of the same environment as our hardware.

Last December Holger Obst from German music production website ReleaseTime.de put our DynaMaxx to the test. We decided to post here a couple of abstracts from the very comprehensive review of our two-channel hardware compressor, which — as it is always the case by ReleaseTime.de — includes plenty of sound samples.
“The SPL DynaMaxx Model 9735 is exceptionally built, rugged enough even for live applications and its audio quality is outstanding. [...] Thanks to the Double VCA Drive, not even when pushed to the limits does it distort. Thus, it sounds very clean and with a superb definition — top analog quality, which is still quite far from what digital compressors can provide.”

Some days ago, we received a very kind message from electronic music composer Hideyuki Ashizawa, owner of def house studio in Yokohama, Japan. Mr. Ashizawa released his latest album, “Sine Wave Avenue,” on iTunes on January 16, 2012, and it instantly peaked at number two on the domestic electro charts!
In order to achieve the highest audio quality possible, he used our dual channel 3-band parametric EQ “Qure” in the mastering process… here are some of his comments:
